Colton's Heroes, a non-profit charitable organization

Our Mission is to bring awareness to Childhood Cancer

Colton's Heroes is dedicated to raising awareness of Childhood Cancer and funds to help families in Southern Colorado, who are dealing with the unthinkable, a child with cancer.

Colton's Heroes is a 501c3 non-profit organization.

We are here to help families in their time of need, which can be anything from a shoulder to cry on to financial support. Through Colton's Heroes families know that they are not alone in this fight against Childhood Cancer.

Colton's Heroes provides families with gift bags to the hospital and/or  the oncology clinic. These gift bags contain gift cards to restaurants and gas stations near the hospital or oncology clinic, a book for the child and information about Colton's Heroes. We know how stressful life can be when you have a child with cancer. We want to relieve that stress if even for a moment, for one meal, for one tank of gas. We also provide help in other ways, like helping with unexpected expenses, donating to benefits that are held to help families. We have also donated to help with funeral cost for a family who lost their little girl to this horrible diease called childhood cancer. We have a yearly trip for one deserving family to ride the Santa Express with all expenses paid, so they can make memories with their child that don't include a hospital room and chemo.

Please consider helping us help others in their time of need.

BECAUSE NO FAMILY SHOULD FIGHT ALONE!!!

The Story Behind Colton's Heroes

Here is story of how Colton's Heroes came to be.

Colton was 2 1/2 when he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Renal Cell Carcinoma, an adult Kidney Cancer. Your child has Cancer, are words no parent should ever hear. There were so many unknowns, so many questions, the feeling of hopelessness, the feeling of being alone. We didn't know anything about childhood cancer, it's one of those things that you think will never happen to your child but here we were thrown into the world of childhood cancer.

Through our experiences God laid it on my heart to start a walk to bring awareness to childhood cancer, which unknown to me at the time would include a non-profit organaztion, I wanted to bring awareness to this horrible disease that is stealing so many of our children's childhoods and lives. Thankfully, I told a lot of people my dream and enough of them believed in me, supported me and most of all gu me. Colton's Heroes was formed  on June 13, 2016  and our the 1st Annual Colton's Walk For Childhood Cancer was held on September 10, 2016.

Colton's Heroes hands out gift bags to families in the hospital or in clinic with gift cards to restaurants, for gas, grocery's, and even coffee. We have helped with funeral costs, a house payment, donated to numerous benefits and most of have become a support system for families who are dealing with the unthinkable, a child with cancer.

Facts about Childhood Cancer

A cancer diagnosis is upsetting at any age, but especially when the patient is a child. The words no parent should ever hear "your child has cancer." They say childhood cancer is rare, yet over 15,700 parents hear those chilling words every year, here in the US.

1 in 285 children will be diagnosed with cancer this year, that is an average of 43 children a day or 15,780 children a year. 12% of children diagnosed with cancer will not survive. Childhood Cancer is not one disease but there are more that 16 major types of pediatric cancer and 100 subtypes. The major types of cancer in children age 0 to 14 years are leukemia (ALL), brain and other central nervous system (CNS) tumors and neuroblasoma (adrenal gland tumor). The cause of most childhood cancers are unknown and can't be prevented.

Cancer is the number one cause of death in children, more than any other disease. An estimated 1,960 children will die from cancer each year. About 35% of children diagnosed with cancer will die with thirty years of diagnosis. On average about 17% of children will dies within five years of diagnosis. Among those children that survive the five years from diagnosis, 18% will dies within thirty years of diagnosis. Those that survive the five years have an 8x's greater mortality rate due to the increased risk of liver and heart disease and an increased risk for reoccurrence of the original cancer or of a secondary cancer.

Chemotherapy and Radiation work by killing fast growing cancer cells. The problem with children is chemo and radiation is that  it not only kills the fast growing cancer cells but it also kills the good/normal fast growing cells.

Late Effects are health problems that show up months to years after treatment has ended. Late effects can be damage to the heart, the lungs, can cause secondary cancers, growth defects, nerve damage, hearing lose, infertility and more. It is becoming increasingly apparent that Childhood Cancer is FOR LIFE.
